About Tomas Kmet: Tomas grew up in the eastern block and converted to the Catholic faith as a teenager after the fall of the Berlin wall. He is part of the Catholic renewal in Calgary and serves on the board of the CCCRS. Together with his wife Miriam and five children, they are active in Holy Spirit Parish.

About Peter Thompson: Peter experienced a renewal in faith when he was baptized in the spirit in 1974. He has served extensively in the CCR both nationally and internationally with the Vatican office ICCRS. He has served with Renewal Ministries on many missionary journies especially in Africa.

Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God – “Mary is blessed with God’s life – and so are we.”

On this feast of Mary, Mother of God, almost nothing is actually said about Mary. The first reading focuses on God’s blessing of the people of Israel. The second shows us how that blessing will come about through Mary in Christ. In the Gospel, we see Mary’s response — to treasure all these things in her heart. God’s blessing is for all of the people, and so we too are blessed members of God’s holy family. He desires to use each of us in our own way, to carry Jesus into the world so all might find a place in the family of God. May we hear and treasure God’s call for our lives.

“God who sent your Son to Mary and to all of us, you have blessed us and made us your own. Teach us to treasure your blessings and your call for our lives. May we marvel at the mystery of how you call and complete us. Amen.”

“We find God’s life in learning to love our families well.“

The opening lines of Colossians put forward a beautiful reminder of our call to family life. We are invited to put on compassion and kindness, humility and gentleness, patience and forgiveness. The reading assumes we will fail and try again, learning to love by loving. Our families are a gift of God, drawing us into the practices of love, filling us with opportunities to practice virtues. Celebrate with your family this week the ways by which you love each other well. And name an area or two in which you’d like God to help you grow as a family.

“Jesus, Son of God, and of Mary and of Joseph, brother of us all, you became a member of the human family so we could all be members of God’s eternal family. Make our families schools of love. Heal our wounds and draw us deeper into your grace. Amen.“

Our lives are marked by the light we have seen.“

The opening of the first reading has washed over us year after year: The people who wander in darkness have seen a great light. While we walk through this strange year with much darkness, we remain the people who have seen the light that is Jesus. Even when our vision grows dim, or we strain to feel Jesus near, the truth is we have seen Him and known Him, and His light dispels the darkness. We celebrate the coming of Jesus as people
who know and love the light of God, and who trust that Light will find us eventually, no matter how deep the darkness. May we delight in the light and life of Jesus, come to us now.

Lord of light, dispel the darkness in our hearts and our world.
Fix our eyes on the light you send, and to trust that light will rise in the deepest dark. May Christmas come in our hearts and homes, and out into the world aching for light. Amen

God’s life is with us, and in us, and through us.

David and Mary get very similar messages from God through the prophet Nathan and the angel Gabriel in these readings for the fourth and final Sunday of Advent: God is with you exactly as you are, residing within you. David is hung up about needing a fancier place for the Holy of Holies to reside, and Mary is confused about just how the Son of God will find His way into her body. In both cases, the messengers remind them God is not worried about the trappings or the how. God needs their willingness – and ours – to be fully present to the world in and through His people. David and Mary allow God to be fully present within themselves, and then to spill out from them to others. God is dwelling within you. Allow yourself to marvel at His birth – again – in your heart so you can carry Christ into the world.

God made flesh, make your home in our hearts. Help us to
make space for the mystery of your life within us. Draw us into your presence in and for the world. Amen.
